Propane provides exceptional capabilities as a clean energy source for your home. Propane is frequently used for space heating, central heat system, water heating, cooking, fireplaces, and clothes dryer. In outdoor living spaces, propane is widely used for outdoor grills, lighting, and heating pools and spas. When electricity power goes out, propane is often the energy source that powers standby generators.

Our Chiles’s Sales team is extremely knowledgeable and prepared to assist you with the right size of the propane storage tank and any appliances you may need.  Whether you are in need of an above ground tank or underground tank, Chiles is here to help you determine what is best for your needs. Our Chiles’s Technicians will take care of all aspects of tank and appliance installation.

Underground tank Installation

Underground propane tanks have been used for decades and have a proven safety record. While parts of the process can be tackled by a do-it-yourselfer (excavation, purchase of fill, backfill and landscaping), other parts of the process should be managed only by a professional (tank installation, cathodic protection, gas piping, safety check and placing the system into service).

Underground tanks typically installed at residences range from 120 gallons to 1000 gallons, with the most common being 500 gallons. National codes dictate distance requirements from buildings to the tank. Tanks must be installed 10 feet from any building, property line, or potential ignition source (such as an air-conditioning unit). They also shouldn’t be further than 85 feet from a driveway or access road so that the delivery truck’s hose can reach.

To bury a 500-gallon tank, you need a hole approximately five feet deep, five feet wide, and 12 ft. long. The tank should be bedded in sand for drainage and backfilled with sand or clean fill to prevent damage to the tank coating from rocks and debris. The upper few inches of the dome should be exposed to allow service access to valves and regulators. Slope the ground away from the dome to keep water out of it. Landscaping can be planted around the tank to hid this area; just make sure to leave a clear path for delivery people.

In addition to special coatings that help prevent corrosion, all underground tanks need to be installed with cathodic protection. Typically, sacrificial anodes (magnesium or zinc ingots encased in bags of special material) are attached to the tank. The metal in the anodes wastes away, preventing the steel tank from corroding. Periodic testing will show if the anodes are protecting the tank properly. They ought to last 50 years and can be replaced.

Work closely with your propane dealer to find the best location for your tank. Choose a propane dealer with a proven track record and an excellent reputation for safety. Specifically, ask about training, insurance and customer support because some smaller companies provide only a minimum standard for any of the three.

Tank Installation

A common question from new customers is “What is involved in switching companies?”. The answer is: Not too much. It is generally a quick and simple process that we do hundreds of times a year. Some details are listed below:

The entire process usually takes only about 2 hours.

  • We disconnect and place your current tank off to the side.
  • We install your new Chiles Propane tank.
  • We complete a leak test and re-light your appliances.
  • You then can call your prior propane provider and let them know to pick up the disconnected tank.

Relax! We will take care of you and your family from here on out.

There is no installation fee for switching out a propane tank, you just pay for the gas!
Moving into a new home? We are here to help! We will install the tank where you would like it and construct a trench and install the propane gas line.  Our Free Tank Installation package includes up to 60’ of gas piping.  If you would like the tank farther than 60’ from the house, there will be an additional charge for the trenching and gas line.

Depending on your propane needs we can help you select the appropriate sized tank to have installed:

120-gallon tank: Minimum annual usage of 200 gallons.

250-gallon tank: Minimum annual usage of 400 gallons.

330-gallon tank: Minimum annual usage of 500 gallons.

500-gallon tank*: Minimum annual usage of 600 gallons
* This is the most common tank for residential homes.

1000-gallon tank: Minimum annual usage of 1600 gallons.

If the minimum annual usage is not met, a low-use fee may apply.

Gas Check Safety Inspection

GAS Check® is an inspection program developed by the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) and the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC), and funded by PERC that provides guidelines to technicians on how to perform two different types of residential safety inspections:

Gas System Check can be completed on the gas delivery system, including the containers, regulators and appurtenances; and
a Gas Appliance System Check includes all of the items of a “Gas Systems Check” as well as on all propane-burning appliances.

GAS Check® also educates homeowners on the safe use of propane and the maintenance of propane appliances.
